Cross-Border Railway Project

A safe and sustainable railway connection along the Karkamış–Çobanbey line

The Karkamış–Çobanbey Stations Syria Railway Connection is a comprehensive engineering project involving the planning of railway transport and the development of technical project infrastructure in the mine-risk area between the two stations.

The project jointly assessed the existing railway infrastructure, route conditions, terrain, security requirements specific to the border region and operational needs. A safe, feasible and operable connection solution was developed through an approach requiring activities in hazardous areas to be coordinated with the competent authorities.

Technical Project Scope

Integrated railway planning for hazardous site conditions

The connection between Karkamış and Çobanbey stations was designed by jointly addressing route safety, compatibility with existing infrastructure, railway geometry and operational requirements along the border line.

Existing Conditions and Route Analysis

The existing railway corridor between the stations, terrain characteristics, infrastructure elements and connection points were examined to evaluate the technical data underpinning project decisions.

Mine Risk and Site Safety

Security procedures and site access conditions established by the competent authorities were taken into consideration to ensure the safe execution of inspections, surveys and implementation activities in areas presenting a mine risk.

Track Geometry and Connection Design

The horizontal and vertical geometry of the railway connection was evaluated in accordance with existing tracks, station approaches, curve and gradient conditions, and the technical requirements of safe railway operations.

Infrastructure and Superstructure Design

Technical solutions for earthworks, engineering structures, drainage systems, ballast layers, sleepers, rails and turnout connections were developed in accordance with route conditions.

Border Crossing and Operational Planning

Railway movements along the border line, controlled crossing requirements, train reception and dispatch processes, and the operational connection between the stations were addressed through an integrated planning approach.

Inter-Institutional Technical Coordination

Technical approval, site access and project implementation coordination requirements were evaluated with due consideration for the respective responsibilities of the railway administration, security units and relevant public authorities.

Engineering Approach

Integrating safety, technical compliance and cross-border access within a single project

Developing a railway connection in a border region with a mine risk requires a disciplined planning process encompassing not only track design but also site safety, controlled access and inter-institutional coordination.

KTM Group evaluated railway engineering decisions for the Karkamış–Çobanbey connection alongside the region’s security conditions and operational requirements. This resulted in a project approach compatible with the existing infrastructure, addressing technical risks at an early stage and supporting the safe development of cross-border railway transport.
